An Introduction to Fandoms

When people hear the word "fandom", the first thing that comes to their minds in most cases is the image of little girls screaming for celebrities and writing fanfiction in which they are the protagonists of a love story. However, fandoms are composed of all kinds of different people.

Contrary to popular belief, fandoms were not invented in the 21st century, not even in the 20th. According to Cavicchi, these groups of people that we now call fandoms existed long before the word had even been created. From the 19th century or even before, there were already audiences that met based on the things they fancied and received names like "maniacs" or "devotees" [1].

Sounds interesting? Stay and read! In this blog you will find posts about the impact of fandoms on mental health, where to find them, how they are structured, and how people within them communicate. You will also read about the possibility of turning your passion into profitable fan work from which you can make a living. There is also a survey showing how real people experience fandoms in their lives.
